Cable TV Now Accounts for Just 18% of All Media Consumption in United States

Every day more people ditch Cable TV and join the Cord Cutting world with an antenna and a digital media service like Netflix or Sling TV. In 2009, 45% of all media consumed in the United States was through cable television. In 2014, that number fell to just 18% of all media consumption in the United States. (Print media, on old fashioned paper, fell from 9% to 4%.) The big winner in the battle for your eyes was mobile media jumping from just 4% to 23% in 2014. (This is all according to eMarketer, April 2014.)

Digital media like Netflix, Hulu, and Amazon Instant increased from 32% in 2009 to 49% in 2014. It is estimated that starting in 2017, digital media will bring in $74 billion dollars, more than cable TV’s $69 billion dollars.

As many of the best shows on TV are available free over the air with an inexpensive antenna like a Mohu Leaf, you have to ask yourself why pay for cable. According to TV Guide, 14 of the top 15 shows last week are available with an antenna or Sling TV.

So why pay on average $1,200 a year when you could get so many great shows and events free with just an antenna? With a Mohu antenna most people receive over 40 channels of great content, many channels in HD. Add in a service like Netflix or Sling TV and you have a wealth of amazing shows and movies at your fingertips without the massive cable bill.
