Frugal Fun Day Ideas for Cordcutters

The first Saturday in October is International Frugal Fun Day! We think it makes for the perfect opportunity to celebrate and share your cord cutting ways with others and create new entertainment options through simple, inexpensive DIY projects.

Here are a few ways cordcutters can enjoy Frugal Fun Day this year.

Over-the-Air Amusement

With your Mohu HDTV antenna you can get all the available over air channels broadcast in your area for free to share with friends and family. Here’s a link to the listing of TV shows being broadcast on October 3rd, 2015.

Being a cord cutter means saving money, but it also means sharing the love of great TV.  On Frugal Fun Day there’s no better way to do that than to invite friends over to your house for a football party potluck. Have everyone bring their favorite tailgating food and drink, and watch Notre Dame vs Clemson on ABC (8PM EST/PST) over air in HD using your Mohu HDTV antenna.

Over air TV channel availability will vary depending upon where you live and the range of your HDTV antenna, but in most areas all the major networks: ABC, CBS, NBC, FOX, CW and PBS are available in high definition. Plug in your address to find out what free channels are available in your location.

Stream Savings

In addition to inexpensive paid streaming services like Netflix and Hulu, budget-minded entertainment seekers can find great free entertainment options anywhere they have access to an internet connection.

YouTube is always a great media source, and if you search iTunes, Amazon and the Google Play store you’ll come across lots of free apps providing cheap entertainment.

One of my favorite things to do is to sit in a local coffee shop enjoying free WiFi and catch up on prime content like The Late Night with Steven Colbert using my PlutoTV app on my iPad. You can view this amazingly good FREE streaming service with a PlutoTV app on your PC, Android or iOS device.

Alternatively, if you’re at home using your Roku streaming device you have lots of free channels you can add to your device from the Roku Channel Store including three of my favorites – Crackle, NAT GEO TV and LiveStream.

Masterful Movie Projection

We’ve all got smartphones that we use to shoot amazing video including time lapse creations and stellar photo stills, however sharing those on a small screen isn’t always ideal.

Here’s a Frugal Fun Day project that costs you little or nothing and adds up to big enjoyment in shared entertainment.

Upon completion of this DIY project you can easily share photo stills, movies taken on your iPhone or Android smartphone, Sling TV, Amazon Instant Video and other streaming media.

Pair your phone to a Bluetooth speaker to give your projected video content room-filling sound.

DIY Project Inspiration

On Pinterest there’s a mind-blowing array of inspiring photos and member boards with links to articles from all over the web on nearly every subject imaginable. You can select general topics of interest or search by keywords.

Pinterest is free and somewhat addicting to those of us who love visual media and learning new things.

For Frugal Fun Day, search Pinterest using general terms like ‘DIY’ or ‘DIY Project’. You’ll get lots of results that may inspire you to create in ways you’d not thought of yet. For example, using existing resources like wood pallets to create both indoor and outdoor furniture.

If you narrow your search by using specific terms, adding them to the search box right along side the initial general terms, you will come up with user-friendly links to cheap, fun project tutorials.

Pinterest is an easy way to locate inexpensive, DIY Frugal Fun Day ideas and a wonderful resource for bargain tips that can be used throughout the year.
