Mohu Spotlight: Leaf 50 HDTV Antenna

The Mohu Leaf 50 (sometimes seen as the Mohu Ultimate) is a powerful, easy to use cord cutting tool that can be setup in minutes and provide you with all the available over air TV channels in your area for free! I love to use this antenna in my own home to pull in all the major network TV broadcasts from ABC, NBC, CBS and FOX, including local and national news programming in HD.

This amplified, flat, indoor HDTV antenna is ideal for anyone who lives up to 50 miles away from television broadcast towers in an urban, suburban or rural setting. I live 45 miles away from the furthest tower in my area on a road a few miles outside of town. (Picture cows in the pasture and turkeys wandering down the middle of the road.)  The over-the-air broadcast television signals have to travel down a long, twisting valley flanked with forested mountains on either side to reach my location.

My Leaf 50 is placed about 3″ down from the top of my 8′ living room ceiling and picks up all 14 available channels beautifully.  I have the antenna connected to a 60″ HDTV and everything I watch in high definition looks as good or better than it did from the cable company. I have no regrets about being a cord cutter and the Leaf 50 made it possible for me.

I’m not the only one who loves their Mohu Leaf, check out Why the Mohu Leaf is Awesome According to Cord Cutters to see videos of Mohu Leaf owners singing the praises of this incredible technology.

Product Overview

As with the other Mohu antennas, the Leaf 50 picks up both VHF and UHF channels. The VHF range for this indoor antenna is up to 20 miles and the UHF range is up to 50. The antenna is multi-directional (able to draw broadcast television channels from any direction) so you don’t have to point in a specific direction to receive a signal.

This HDTV antenna costs $69.99 and comes with a 1 year part and labor warranty from Mohu. It’s black on one side and white on the other, but if that doesn’t work for you it’s OK to paint it to match your decor. The Leaf 50 ships with 16′ of detachable white coaxial cable and a USB powered amplifier, which helps this high-tech antenna to filter out RF signals from other devices like wireless telephones, which can negatively affect over air TV reception.

The Leaf 50 is modeled after the mud flap antennas used by US military vehicles. It’s sleek look hides high-tech components that provide users  with a reliable way to enjoy free over air TV at home or on the go; such as when RVing.

User Considerations

Weather

All over air antennas are subject to fluctuations in weather.  Rain, wind, and snow can affect your reception no matter what antenna you choose.

While this can be a frustrating thing to deal with, especially in severe weather, it’s a rare occurrence and something that can often be overcome by simply moving the antenna and re-scanning for channels using your HDTV’s remote.

Terrain

In an ideal over air antenna scenario, you would live in a flat area with broadcast towers in sight of your location. Since most of us don’t live in that ideal situation, terrain can be a factor with respect to channel reception.

I was really surprised by how well the Leaf 50 worked at my location and while terrain is certainly a factor to be considered, it’s not necessarily going to be an issue for you.

The build quality of the Mohu antennas is excellent, and they are backed by stellar customer service. If you have questions about which antenna will work best for you at your location, contact Mohu and they’ll help you to successfully cut the cord.

Placement

A key factor in over air channel reception is antenna placement at your location.

Placing your Leaf 50 as high as possible is best. In a window, on a shelf, or behind the TV will all work, but you may have to try multiple placements with subsequent channel scans to find just the right placement to obtain all the broadcast channels in your area.

Versatile.
