Almost two years ago the average set-top box power use was shown to be higher than refrigerators, thanks to their “always on” default, and inclusion of DVR technology.

The estimated impact of this energy wastefulness was $2 billion annually, according the National Resources Defense Council, who released the report.

This got government officials talking about imposing energy limits on cable boxes, which made the industry pledge a “sleep” function in December 2012 to reduce set-top box power use by up to 30 percent.

The lesson here is an old one: knowledge is power (particularly when you can put it into dollars and cents).

Inspired by this, I made a list of five questions I have for the companies that I use. Please post your own questions in the comments, preferably in meme format.

1.	J. Crew: Shouldn’t your shorts cost half as much as your pants? That’s just logic.
2.	Nintendo: Why can’t the WiiU use more than one new gamepad?
3.	Snickers: How is your candy bar so good? I should be paying you more money.
4.	Target: Your ads look expensive. Did you sell that dog to pay for them?
5.	Google: If I wear your new glasses, will you stop reading my email?

If the intersection of television and technology is among your interests, you might be familiar with general TV blogs like TVtechnology, The Tech Beat, and the oh-so originally named Television + Technology Blog.

One television blog out of Colorado, however, is doing its reporting on the local level in America.

TV Tech News is written by Andrew Dodson, technology editor for NewsCheckMedia. As you can tell by my pithy summaries below of recent topics covered, the content offered is highly attuned:

• A Springfield, Missouri TV-affiliate’s use of Single-Frequency Networks
• Netflix gains a better tool for video transcoding
• A Denver, Colorado’s TV-affiliate’s use of GoPro cameras for live broadcast
• A Montana TV-affiliate gets a High-Definition news set
• Young Broadcasting Co.’s new user-friendly production system

What first brought TTN to our attention is Dodson’s recent post about cutting the cord on his satellite TV service, and the financial analysis that led him to that decision. Some of his reasons for doing so— “tired of paying a high bill,” “HD looks better over-the-air,” and “never watch a majority of the digital channels,”—sounded a lot like many of our customers.

Cutting the cord with a Mohu Leaf

It’s interesting to see television blogs like Dodson’s show how industry companies use new technologies to deliver value to their customers—things like mobile boosters for news trucks or online/broadcast ad cross-analysis. These improvements show how broadcast companies in particular are making television faster, crisper, richer in content and increasingly better in picture quality.

Take Sony’s decision to broadcast several games of the 2014 FIFA Confederations Cup using high-resolution 4K technology. 4K means that 4,000 pixels are used for horizontal resolution, resulting in extremely fine detail, making the quick movements and vibrant colors of an international soccer match that much easier for your eye to see.

A cable line will compress that resolution, meaning that all the fancy resolution won’t necessarily show up on your HD TV. But if you’re using a high-quality antenna, like, say, the Mohu Leaf, no compression of the HD signal occurs, and you get to see the match in its purest original resolution.

All the more reason to switch over to Mohu!

A recent piece by the New York Times noted that people are increasing cancelling their subscriptions to cable—the shocking part to me was the numbers involved: about one million subscribers every year saying, “Thanks, but no thanks,” for the past five years in a row, according to a study, with 2013 likely to lose a million more. What really makes that number pop is knowing the total number of subscribers: 90 million, says Nielsen.

High Cable Bills

Knowing that Time Warner makes $870 from a basic cable subscription (thank you, LA Times), you can imagine the conversations in the boardroom’s at Comcast and Time Warner. I picture Time Warner’s CEO, Glenn Britt, essentially reacting like this:

“Does this mean no more free Jell-O in the breakroom?”

Mohu’s paper-thin antennas let you snag over-the-air channels in 1080p high definition, all with no monthly or annual costs. In fact, there are no recurring costs whatsoever. Scroll down our blog for more info about more detailed financial savings and how to find what channels are available in your area. For now, think on this:

What could you do with $870?

Antenna Manufacturer Forecasts 300% Growth in 2013 as it Expands into Major Retail

Raleigh, NC. – March 5, 2013 – Today Mohu announced revenue grew 700% last year and is expected to increase 300% in 2013. Since introducing the Leaf antenna in March 2011, the company has quickly positioned itself as a leader in the “cord-cutting” movement currently underway in the United States. Mohu estimates it has saved its customers more than $220 million in monthly cable and satellite bills.

Yahoo!/CNBC recently released its annual Top 10 Gadget list, and in it named the Mohu Leaf among the top ranking products alongside the Apple iPad and Amazon Kindle. Throughout 2012, the Leaf ranked second in the Television and Video category on Amazon.com just behind the Apple TV. The technology behind the paper-thin Leaf antenna is a byproduct of research conducted for the United States Navy by Mohu’s engineers and was based on a discreet mud flap antenna designed for use on armored vehicles

“It’s a great achievement for Mohu to be named among the most innovative companies in the country and to be recognized as a leader in the cord-cutting movement,” said Mohu Founder and President Mark Buff, Ph.D. “Innovation is a core focus of ours and making a product that is practical, well made, and affordable is what we strive to give consumers each and every day. We make the Leaf here in Raleigh and are proud to be a part of the ‘Made in USA’ manufacturing renaissance happening in the country today.”

About Mohu / Greenwave Scientific, Inc.

Mohu is a leading technology company based in Raleigh, North Carolina. Founder Mark Buff performed research & development relating to Improvised Explosive Device (IED) neutralization and defeat for various military initiatives. His research included the development of “low and no-profile” antenna systems for military ground vehicles, multi-channel antenna apertures for ground robots and anatomically accurate RF absorption measurement systems. Co-founder Russ Winstead worked at IBM for 19 years as part of the development team responsible for IBM’s first laptop, the Thinkpad.

Weighing in at only 3 pounds, the Sky HDTV Antenna is a powerful, amplified antenna solution that was developed from research for the United States military. The antenna design is unlike anything that you will find in texts, literature or competitor’s products. Similar to the Leaf and Leaf Ultimate, the Sky is multidirectional and does not have to be constantly readjusted for optimal signal strength.

1. DO perform a TV Fool signal strength reading to determine optimal placement:

Based on your proximity to a broadcast tower there may be a preferred location to mount your antenna. If you have questions during this process, call our customer support and they will be happy to assist you.

2. DON’T mount your Sky in a basement or lower level:

Elevation is essential when finding the ideal mounting location. The mounting hardware included with your antenna should be used to maximize signal reception.

3. DO mount your Sky as elevated as possible:

The Sky was designed to be mounted on your roof, in your attic, or as close to the ceiling as possible. If you have aluminum siding or a metal roof, be sure to mount the Sky outside away from the siding or above the metal roof if possible. However, it is possible some blockage or scattering of signals may occur.

4. DON’T trap your antenna with any type of interference:

This includes any object (especially metal) that would potentially block a signal from reaching the antenna. In order to have maximum reception, don’t mount the antenna in or near storage areas in attic. Boxes, furniture, clothes and other items near or around your antenna can have an effect on performance.

5. DO mount your antenna in the upright position:

For maximum performance we recommend mounting the Sky straight up with the cable hanging down.

Tips:

Mount your Sky as elevated as possible to optimize reception.

Check your insulation as some contains metal film that will cause interference.

Mount near a window if you have one or on the roof if possible.

.

Do you dread paying your TV bills? Since cable and satellite companies refuse to offer more manageable (pay-TV) bundles, consumers are now evaluating their options to determine if watching TV is really worth the cost. Our innovative lineup of antennas allow you to watch the top network shows, news and sporting events for free in full 1080 HD.

Most cable and satellite companies disregard the fact that consumers are exploring alternative methods to watching television in order to avoid high bills. Dish Network’s Chairman and co-founder Charlie Ergen admits that cutting the cord is in fact a reality.

“A lot of customers can live with Netflix, an antenna and YouTube and they’d be pretty happy,” Ergen said.

So, we did the math and after 5 years of just an antenna plus Netflix, you save over $4,000!

As if the monthly savings were not enough, the Leaf antenna is also convenient for traveling. Enjoy the same great content in your RV, at a tailgate, or while on vacation!

Keep in mind; you don’t have to completely cut the cord in order to save money. Instead of purchasing a cable box for every TV in your house, test out an antenna and see for yourself!

The SkyHDTV Antenna is the newest addition to the Mohu family and offers a completely new take on the traditional rooftop or attic-mounted antenna. Developed from research conducted by Mohu’s engineers for the United States Navy, The Sky’s design is unlike anything available on the market today!

The Sky HDTV Antenna is a powerful, multidirectional, amplified antenna solution that can provide an entire house with free over-the-air broadcast television in full 1080. Despite its compact size, the Sky boasts a reception range of up to 60 miles. Similar to the Leaf and Leaf Ultimate, the Sky is multidirectional and does not have to be readjusted for optimal signal strength. It is even small enough to easily be mounted in an attic. It is also very inconspicuous when mounted very closely to the side of a house.

Did you know, with a Mohu HDTV antenna, you can watch broadcast TV for free? How much could you and your family benefit from simplifying and switching over to broadcast TV? Don’t we all strive to work smarter and not harder? Well, at Mohu we sure do! Even if you aren’t ready to fully break up with your cable or satellite provider, you can still significantly benefit from using a Leaf antenna in your home or when you travel (vacation home, RV, etc.) You can watch over-the-air broadcast TV for free with a Mohu HDTV antenna.

The Leaf Ultimate Indoor HDTV Antenna enables you to watch over-the-air broadcast TV channels without having a monthly cable bill. The airwaves are filled with high-definition TV signals just waiting to be caught and enjoyed by you, for free with broadcast TV. The antenna’s paper-thin, low profile design allows it to receive broadcast TV while blending into your home’s decor.

Our team just spent the last week in Vegas attending the 2013 International CES (Consumer Electronics Show) and simplicity was definitely at the forefront of the event.

“Keep it simple, CE makers,” says Scott Hess, Senior VP of Human Intelligence at Spark Communications, in an interview with Beet.TV. Manufacturers, then, would be wise to avoid too-much complexity and instead go for the idea of “the big easy” he told Beet.TV.

At CES we embraced the world’s most exciting and innovative electronics by some of the most successful companies in the world. 20,000 new products were launched this year at the Las Vegas Convention Center, which took up enough space to cover 393 basketball courts, just to give you an idea.

“Mohu was extremely happy to be a part of 2013 CES especially since it was the biggest CES in its 45 year history. We had our hands full with important meetings and checking out the 3,250 exhibitors. We especially enjoyed furthering our ties with Boxee as we believe it to be an extremely important relationship for Mohu moving into 2013” says Alec Senese, Director of Sales & Marketing.

Even if you aren’t ready to cut the cord with your cable or satellite provider, you can still simplify your life by reducing the number of cable boxes and bills you are responsible for. There is free TV available over-the-air, why not take advantage?

Still not sure if a Mohu HDTV antenna can actually help you simplify your life or save you money? Give us a call. We would love the opportunity to talk with you about which one of our antennas would work best for you. We can do a signal strength reading using your address to see what channels you may be able to pick up based on your proximity to a broadcast tower. Start saving money and which over to free broadcast TV.

Name one cable or satellite provider who is not increasing their rates next year. Don’t worry, we’ll wait

Whenever a contract is up for renewal between a cable or satellite provider and its broadcasters, you can pretty much count on an increase in your bill. Watch TV for free on your terms and don’t let money hungry corporations control your TV viewing experience. Not only does free broadcast TV still exist, it’s available in full HD without the need for an ugly pair of rabbit ears.

By using an indoor HDTV antenna, you can watch broadcast TV over-the-air, which by the way, produces a better quality picture than cable or satellite providers can offer. There are many ways to cut the cord with your cable or satellite provider so that you can watch TV for free.

Contrary to popular belief, you do not need a computer science degree or a collection of nerdy gadgets to successfully cut the cord and watch tv for free. Join the 54 million Americans who are now watching FREE TV in full HD.

Watch TV for Free!

For access to major network programs, you will need:
• Digital TV (for older TVs, just add a converter box)
• Mohu HDTV Antenna

For access to movies and more TV shows, you will need:
• Internet Access
• Set-top Box

Why pay for hundreds of channels that you never watch?

For less than the average monthly cable bill, you can purchase a Mohu HDTV antenna and watch TV for free! For about the same price, you could also purchase a set-top box and stream content from the internet straight to your TV.

For less than the average movie ticket, you can purchase a monthly subscription to Netflix or Hulu Plus and watch endless Hollywood movies and TV shows at your leisure.

Start the New Year off with a little more money in your pocket and a lot more control over how you and your family watch TV!

If you are considering cutting the cord with your cable provider, you aren’t the only one. 2.65 million Americans have cancelled cable subscriptions from 2008-2011, according to a Convergence Consulting Group report. It is projected that by the end of the year, the number of people cutting the cord will reach 3.58 million.

Cutting the Cord

For the price that most Americans pay for cable every year, they could delight in a weekend getaway. The average cable bill in the U.S. is over $80 a month and the annual price increase exceeds 5%. For many of us, the cost outweighs the value, and that’s why we created the Leaf® indoor HDTV antenna. Check out how much you can save here! It’s time to take control of how you watch TV by cutting the cord today!

Overall, the number of U.S. households subscribing to pay TV services declined by 1.5% or 1.5 million in 2011, according to Nielsen. That is particularly interesting because the pay TV industry has never posted a quarterly subscriber decline until 2010. According to a marketing research firm in Texas, about 5% of pay TV subscribers said they have downgraded their cable package and are watching more content online. Aside from the free local TV broadcasts you can receive over-the-air with an antenna, there are other options available that offer your favorite shows and movies. Media streaming set-top boxes such as Boxee, Roku and Simple.tv allow you to watch TV and movies via subscription based internet applications. Popular applications such as Netflix and Hulu Plus will cost you about $8/month, but there are free options available such as Hulu, Crackle and Popcornflix.

Many parents have felt that cable TV gives access to inappropriate programming for children. However, with so many media products available and virtually commercial free, parents can take back control and empower their children to learn about how to make good choices. With so many alternatives, now is the time to take control of how you and your family watch TV by cutting the cord!
Still don’t believe all the hype? Here’s a snapshot of pay TV’s subscription numbers who are already cutting the cord this year:

We’d love to talk more about cutting the cord and how our Leaf® indoor HDTV antennas can help you take control of your TV viewing experience.

Our Leaf indoor TV antenna is not only paper thin and easily hidden, but it is also a DIY decorating opportunity! Because of its sleek design, the Leaf indoor TV antenna can be effortlessly concealed behind a picture, plant, or just about anywhere, and still allow you to receive over-the-air broadcasts in full HD. Whether your Leaf is being used in an elegant living room, a decked out man cave, or a child’s play room, there are endless opportunities to beautify your antenna.

The most popular way to incorporate your Leaf indoor TV antenna into your home’s design scheme is to paint it the same color as your existing walls. By using a multi-purpose latex primer (we used Sherwin-Williams B51W450) and a few coats of your existing wall color, your antenna will seem about as non-existent as your cable bill!

Custom peel & stick decals and decorative duct tape are a great place to start for the less creative or first timers. With so many themes and designs available, there is definitely a style to fit the preferences of anyone in your household. Not only are decals and tape easy to use, but some companies even let you design your own custom pattern!

For the artistically inclined, there are an assortment of paint options available. Keep in mind that paint doesn’t necessarily have to be applied with a brush. We have found that paint pens are very effective and easy to use. With options such as glossy oil, opaque, Sharpie, and glow in the dark, there are countless ways to make decorating exciting and easy.

A great kid-friendly option is to incorporate felt or foam into your design. You can apply a simple, solid color background and then alter the stickers at your leisure. Options are endless with materials such as felt and foam, and you can select your arrangement based on hobbies, holidays, sports teams, family excursions, or whatever suits your mood..

Please keep in mind, while the Leaf indoor TV antenna can be decorated and still work proficiently, there are materials that will absolutely compromise its ability to receive over-the-air broadcasts in full HD. Stay away from glitter, “bedazzling”, and anything metallic, such as: metallic paints, aluminum foil, and metal wires or twist ties. Be sure your antenna works at your location before decorating, as it cannot be returned once it is decorated.

We hope this information is helpful and encourages you to have fun with your antenna. Please send us pictures of your decorated Leaf; we would love to see them! If you have any questions about the Leaf indoor TV antenna or over-the-air broadcasts, please give us a call at 1-855-4-GOMOHU or email us at support@gomohu.com

What is Over-the-Air Television (OTA TV) and how can it help you Save Money?

Over-The-Air (OTA TV) Television refers to free high-definition television station broadcasts in your local area. The stations that are included in this category are the channels that you currently watch on cable or satellite to view local news and major network shows. Most of these channels are network affiliates of large national networks such as: ABC, NBC, CBS, and Fox. However, they are not limited to these networks and can include smaller independent stations. You can take advantage of these free channels with a Mohu antenna and an HD-ready television. If you do not have this kind of television, you can still receive the signals by using an HD converter box.

A Brief History of OTA and Cable

Prior to 2009, almost all of the local stations broadcasted analog signals. Analog television has been around since the 1940s, with the only major change being the addition of color. Whether it was the old indoor “rabbit ears” or a large rotatable roof antenna, people needed to use an antenna before cable came along. Watching OTA TV usually required adjusting the antenna for each channel in order to get good reception. The quality of reception varied greatly, and snowy, fuzzy pictures were often the norm.

As a solution to this issue, cable television was created. It was very popular for its convenience, performance, and affordability. Starting in the early 1970s, commercial, exclusive cable stations began to be carried by cable systems, with the first being HBO. Since then, the number of cable channels has exploded, along with the costs of cable. During this time, all television signals remained analog.

In 2009, the Federal Communication Commission (FCC) mandated that all broadcast stations change over to digital, high-definition broadcasts. This was the culmination of more than two decades of development of the technology for HDTV. High resolution, clear pictures and high quality stereo audio make HDTV a significant improvement over the old analog OTA TV signals.

With the conversion to all digital HDTV broadcasts, the experience of watching Over-the-Air (OTA TV) is completely different than in days past. Gone are the snowy images or ghosting. Digital signals are usually either ‘there’ or not. If you can receive an OTA TV signal, the quality of the signal is either perfect, as good as, or better than what you receive over cable or satellite.

And Now to the Best Part: How you can save money.!

That’s where Mohu comes in…

Like many people, the engineers at Mohu felt that cable costs had become too high. The average cable bill in the US is over $80 a month and the annual price increase exceeds 5%. For many of us the cost outweighs the value and that’s why we created the Leaf™ indoor TV antenna, so you can save money. The Mohu Leaf™ is a high performing indoor TV antenna with a paper-thin, lightweight design. Compared side-by-side to other thin antennas the Mohu Leaf™ is disguisable unlike the obtrusive “rabbit ears.” It is so thin that it can be hung behind a picture, tapestry, or furniture item and there is no effect on the picture quality.

Do the math and save money. At $80 a month (and many spend much more), households are spending over $1000 a year or more for cable that includes many channels, most of which are never watched. The Mohu Leaf Antenna™ costs less than one month’s cable bill. If you use a Mohu Leaf® to save money, you can pocket $80 (or more) each month and still not miss your favorite major network shows.

But what if you have a favorite show only on cable, or you are really into your movie channels? With high speed internet and a monthly subscription to Hulu, Netflix, or Amazon on Demand you can still watch movies and OTA TV shows that you thought you could only get through cable. (Did we mention that these subscriptions usually run less than $10 a month?). Other specialty shows may stream episodes off of their own websites. By streaming through a set top box (such as a Boxee), you can watch these shows on your television at a time that is convenient for you, without the hassles of DVR.

Useful Examples of the Mohu Leaf®:

•Watching your local stations and pairing with a streaming device to view some of the shows that you will miss from cable (on average it is less than 1/8 of the cost!)

• For lesser used areas, paying for an additional cable outlet and installation is not cost effective. If your house has guest rooms or a workshop that isn’t wired for cable, you can use a Mohu Leaf™ to provide a television for viewing.

•Vacation homes, RV’s, laptops (with TV tuners) and tailgating.

Mohu History

Mohu is a subsidiary of GreenWave Scientific, a defense-oriented research and development company that creates and produces sophisticated antennas for the Navy and other DoD (Department of Defense) customers. The designers at GreenWave Scientific and Mohu have decades of experience designing and developing advanced products for the government as well as consumer products. Mohu’s technical staff has multiple advanced degrees in engineering, including several Ph.D’s. The technology behind the Mohu Leaf Antenna™ grew out of work performed for the U.S. military.
