Classic Over-the-Air Network Antenna TV Expanding Coverage

Last year more than 70 new over-the-air TV stations went live in the United States. Now 2017 seems to be getting off to a great start when it comes to over-the-air TV stations with the expansion of Antenna TV to new markets.

Antenna TV, the popular over-the-air TV network that airs classic TV from the 1950s through the 1990s including Family Ties, The Jeffersons, and All in the Family, announced recently that it will be adding new stations. Currently Antenna TV covers 80% of US households with 114 full power affiliates and 27 low power affiliates.

According to a press release, Antenna TV will be added to the following:

  • KSCW in Wichita, Kansas (The CW affiliate)
  • WDBD in Jackson, Mississippi (FOX affiliate)
  • WLTZ in Columbus, Georgia (NBC affiliate)

The addition of these markets will bring Antenna TV coverage to 87% of US households and make Antenna TV the most widely available digital over-the-air TV network in the United States outside of the major networks ABC, CBS, The CW, FOX, NBC, and PBS.

Based off of the success Antenna TV is seeing Tribune, the owners of Antenna TV, is reported to be looking at launching a sister station called Antenna TV Classics, which would focus on shows that aired before the 1950s. For now, we have no details about a date or a lineup for Antenna TV Classics.

Antenna TV first launched on January 1, 2001, and is owned by Tribune Broadcasting located in Chicago. Overall Antenna TV is the fourth most popular digital sub-channel in America behind only MyNetworkTV, Grit, and MeTV. Now it announced that it will be adding several new affiliates in 2017.

Hopefully the success of Antenna TV and other networks such as MeTV and smaller newer networks such as the Justice Network will continue. As they continue to be profitable more networks will start offering free over-the-air TV options for cord cutters.
