Cord Cutting Guide to Watching Golf: July 2017

June is over, the US Open has passed, and we’re still more than a month away from the PGA Championships. But that doesn’t mean there’s not plenty of opportunity for watching golf while we wait. For the month of July you’ve got five fantastic professional tournaments to look forward to, including the British Open, and not a single one requires a cable subscription to watch.

Let’s take a look!

Golf in July TV Schedule

The Greenbrier Classic – Golf Channel, CBS

July 6-9

First played in 2010, The Greenbrier Classic takes place in White Sulphur Springs, West Virginia and  is one of the newer events on the PGA Tour. Last year historic levels of flooding destroyed the course, leading to the event’s cancellation. Many doubted that the course would be ready in time for this year’s tournament, but against all odds the course has been restored just in time.

The John Deere Classic – Golf Channel, CBS

July 13-16

Taking place in Silvis, Illinois, this PGA tournament has the notorious honor of being scheduled one week before the British Open. Sounds simple enough, right? What you may not be taking into account is the very large time difference between Illinois and Britain. Most players that compete in both won’t have time to acclimate to the jet lag, adding an extra level of drama later on down the road.

The Barbasol Championship – Golf Channel

July 20-23

Promoted as an alternative event, the Barbasol Championship has the distinction of being the first PGA tournament to take place in Alabama since 1990. Unfortunately there’s not a lot of prestige attached to the tournament quite yet, and while the champion’s purse is $3.5 million it’s still easily overshadowed by the British Open; which occurs at the same time across the pond.

The British Open – Golf Channel, NBC

July 20-23

Known to us as the British Open, The Open Championship is one of the four major championships in professional golf. First played in 1860, the British Open also has the honor of being the oldest of the championships. And with that storied tradition comes an additional level of prestige that is associated with walking away as champion.

The RBC Canadian Open – Golf Channel, CBS

July 27-30

Not to be outdone by their British and American cousins, the RBC Canadian Open also happens to be one of the oldest championships in the PGA; with only the British Open and the US Open being older. If golfers happen to win all three Open tournaments in a season, it’s known as winning the “Triple Crown,” although that hasn’t been done since Tiger Woods in 2000. Although not as popular as the other two opens, the RBC Canadian Open is still well respected in the sport.

As you might have noticed, all our events will land on one of three channels: The Golf Channel, NBC, and CBS. Here’s how you watch all of these networks.

Watching Golf Over the Air

In order to get NBC and CBS, all you need is an over-the-air antenna. TV antennas are in expensive, easy to find at your local electronics store or online, and give you countless hours of free HD television; no strings attached. Even if you don’t like golf, OTA antennas are a great tool to have in your cord cutting toolbox.

Watching Golf Online

In order to get the Golf Channel, you’ll need a live television streaming service; like DirecTV Now or Sling TV. There are a lot of streaming services out there, with different pluses and minuses depending on what you want to watch and what device you own.

How do you decide? Head over to untangle.tv. This is a super helpful app / site the makes if very easy to determine which streaming service will work best for you.
