More HBO and Showtime Shows to Watch

Streaming HBO and Showtime opens up a whole new world of programming possibilities for cord cutters. In addition to the well known series’ like Game of Thrones and Homeland, both TV networks offer equally awesome shows that are often overlooked by subscribers and media outlets alike.

Here are a few of my favorite lesser known shows, with a mention of a couple of upcoming likely hits for these premium networks.

HBO

Hard Knocks

At the beginning of each NFL season Hard Knocks takes a special behind the scenes look at one NFL team from training camp into the regular season. This reality show offers an immersive, dramatic look into the lives of the players, coaches, and the process of building a championship team.

VICE

Watch VICE to learn more about news stories making headlines around the world. Having won last year’s Emmy award for Outstanding Informational Series or Special, VICE offers an in-depth look at provocative issues from around the globe that are effecting us all.

Last Week Tonight with John Oliver

A satirical look at current events related to news and politics, About Last Week Tonight with John Oliver is a funny, yet incisive romp that is in the same vein as The Daily Show with Jon Stewart. A mind-opening experience, this show will appeal to those who want to learn while they laugh.

The Brink

Timely geopolitical story lines are the basis for this new dark comedy staring Tim Robbins and Jack Black. The antithesis of Homeland, this series makes any world crisis a laughing matter.

Show Me A Hero

An HBO Original 6-part dramatic miniseries focusing on one man’s desire to look beyond race and make things right for his city.

Showtime

The Affair

Filled with sexual tension and family drama, The Affair is started by a happily married novelist who is drawn to a young, married waitress who is trying to piece her life back together following a family tragedy. The series uses a flashback format to tell a dramatic tale with dark secrets skillfully and seductively revealed to its rapt audience.

HAPPYish

This show takes a semi-dramatic, yet often funny look at the absurdity of life in the age of technology for 40-somethings hoping to be HAPPYish with their lives. Moving into its second season, this show is relate-able and real.

7 Deadly Sins

A slightly disturbing, yet highly entertaining series by documentary filmmaker Morgan Spurlock, each episode is dedicated to exposing real-life examples of the 7 Deadly Sins in contemporary society. Sometimes repulsive, always engrossing, 7 Deadly Sins is a mind-blowing experience!

3AM

It’s 3AM in NYC, and five 20-somethings are trolling the streets pursuing their passions, often in illicit and bizarre ways. That’s the focus of this Showtime Original reality series filmed in the city that never sleeps.

In addition to these shows, in early 2016 you can look forward to Billions, a tug-of-war thriller intertwining high finance and political intrigue. Billions stars Paul Giamatti and Damian Lewis, and is just one more persuasive reason to cut the cord and stream premium content.
