Cutting the cord

If you are considering cutting the cord with your cable provider, you aren’t the only one.  2.65 million Americans have cancelled cable subscriptions from 2008-2011, according to a Convergence Consulting Group report. It is projected that by the end of the year, the number of people cutting the cord will reach 3.58 million.

Cutting the Cord

For the price that most Americans pay for cable every year, they could delight in a weekend getaway. The average cable bill in the U.S. is over $80 a month and the annual price increase exceeds 5%. For many of us, the cost outweighs the value, and that’s why we created the Leaf® indoor HDTV antenna. Check out how much you can save here! It’s time to take control of how you watch TV by cutting the cord today!

Cutting the Cord
Overall, the number of U.S. households subscribing to pay TV services declined by 1.5% or 1.5 million in 2011, according to Nielsen. That is particularly interesting because the pay TV industry has never posted a quarterly subscriber decline until 2010. According to a marketing research firm in Texas, about 5% of pay TV subscribers said they have downgraded their cable package and are watching more content online.  Aside from the free local TV broadcasts you can receive over-the-air with an antenna, there are other options available that offer your favorite shows and movies. Media streaming set-top boxes such as Boxee, Roku and Simple.tv allow you to watch TV and movies via subscription based internet applications. Popular applications such as Netflix and Hulu Plus will cost you about $8/month, but there are free options available such as Hulu, Crackle and Popcornflix.

Many parents have felt that cable TV gives access to inappropriate programming for children. However, with so many media products available and virtually commercial free, parents can take back control and empower their children to learn about how to make good choices. With so many alternatives, now is the time to take control of how you and your family watch TV by cutting the cord!
Still don’t believe all the hype? Here’s a snapshot of pay TV’s subscription numbers who are already cutting the cord  this year:
